In this minor modification I added a 50 lb. gas spring between the column and the head, meant to assist the Z-axis motor in lifting the weight of the head. The stock part is a 50 lb. gas spring with ball-joint fittings, McMaster part #4138T621.

These parts change Grizzly, Homier, Cummins, and Harbor Freight mini mills to 20 thread per inch feed screws on the X- and Y-axis. Each rotation of the hand wheel will advance the table 0.050". 6/13 · I only used 2 screws to mount it, one top and one bottom, so in typical use the pinion does not go over the weaker drilled areas of the rack when under any load. This gives over an inch more "Z" that is fully usable for machining, plus maybe another inch where the head slide is partly off the dovetail but still legit for changing tools or hopping over obstructions.
